Country on Sale: CAMBODIA

Periodically I’m going to run a special deal on prints taken in the country I was traveling in at that time one year earlier.

THIS MONTH’S FEATURED COUNTRY: CAMBODIA–10% off all prints of photos taken in Cambodia!

Cambodia was a confusing country.  Extremely poor, I was constantly haggling over prices and thwarting children trying to separate me from every dollar bill I carried.  It got to be exhausting, but then I would see Siem Reap at sunrise and meet orphans whose parents had been killed by landmines left over from the Vietnam War.  Experiences like these made created lots of conflicting emotions and memories.  The crude roads made it difficult to get out of the areas most tourists flocked to, so I still feel like there’s a whole side of Cambodia I have yet to see.

Beginning a New Endeavour

A few friends have asked me to start taking pictures of them for senior pictures and evens and parties, which is definitely a new direction for me.  It’s been fun to start to play with those situations and develop an entirely new set of photography skills!  I’m going to be posting these shots on Photos From A Broad in America, the sister site that I’m working on right now, so look for those once the site is up and running.  Hopefully I’ll be able to build on these experiences and keep learning and growing.  Here are a few things from photo shoots done for senior pictures and a spring festival of sorts:

Country on Sale: LAOS

Periodically I’m going to run a special deal on prints taken in the country I was traveling in at that time one year earlier.

THIS MONTH’S FEATURED COUNTRY: LAOS–10% off all prints of photos taken in Laos!

Things slow down a lot in Laos, even more than in places like Thailand and Indonesia.  You float down rivers, take a day to drive a few hundred miles through the hills, sit and wait for buses or service in a restaurant…that sort of thing.  You also see some of the most beautiful natural views and eat some of the most delicious food ever.  I wish I had been able to spend more time in small towns and hiking into the hills to see rural life, but at this point in the trip there was a giant clock counting down the days ever faster.

Exhibition at Schuler Confirmed!

Excellent news!  Schuler Books on Alpine is indeed going to display my photos in their Chapbook Cafe, starting May 1 and running all the way until August 14th!  I will have lots of photos from my time abroad, but also new shots that I’ve taken here in the US over the winter and in Puerto Rico from a few weeks ago.

I’m  super excited to have Schulers host me because I have been going to this store since I was a kid.  I always wanted to work there and turned in several unsuccessful job applications.  🙂  So far they’ve been extremely easy to work with and I can’t wait to bring my pictures to a whole new audience.  Many, many thanks to them for having faith in me as an artist!

Here is the address and hours of the store:

3165 Alpine Ave.
Walker, MI 49544
(616)647-0567
Open M-Th 9-9, F-Sa 9-10, Su 10-7

Country on Sale: INDONESIA (yes, again)

Periodically I’m going to run a special deal on prints taken in the country I was traveling in at that time one year earlier.

THIS MONTH’S FEATURED COUNTRY: INDONESIA–10% off all prints of photos taken in Indonesia!

Yes, I’ve had a sale on these photos before, but because I made so many individual trips to this country, you’ll probably see it listed a few times.  🙂  I went to Indonesia at least 4 times during my 2 years in Singapore and it has become one of my top three favorite countries in the world.  Each island is incredibly unique and has its own culture and feel.  It has everything from beaches to jungles to major cities to volcanoes to undersea gardens for scuba diving.  I adore it and can’t wait to return some day.

New Material and Plenty of It!

I just got back from over a week in Puerto Rico and am incredibly excited about all of the great new shots I’ve captured!  It’s going to take me quite a while to process all of them and make them look exactly the way I want them to, but it’s a challenge I’m looking forward to.

But this brings me to my main point: since I have been taking so many pictures in the US lately, at some point in the near future I’m going to be creating a sister site to host my American-based photos.  Keep an eye out for that soon, and in the meanwhile here are a few shots from Puerto Rico to give you a taste of what I’ve seen:

Country on Sale: THAILAND

Periodically I’m going to run a special deal on prints taken in the country I was traveling in at that time one year earlier.

THIS MONTH’S FEATURED COUNTRY: THAILAND–10% off all prints of photos taken in Thailand!

Thailand was an interesting country to travel through, and one that I spent more time in than most others.  I found it to be more touristy than places like Indonesia and Malaysia, which might explain why the Thai people seemed a bit less friendly than the people of other countries I’ve visited.  But the culture was enchanting and the beaches and parties were actually a welcome change of pace, at least for a time!  It’s a huge country, so I didn’t get as far into the heart of it as I would have liked, but some experiences, like the week I spent touring the north on a motorcycle, got me far away enough from tourists to feel like I’d really seen the true Thailand.
